Exciting Changes for Ross-on-Wye? Pedestrianisation Study Shows Positive Feedback
A recent feasibility study into the potential pedestrianisation of part of Broad Street in Ross-on-Wye has received encouraging feedback, sparking discussions about the future of the town’s vibrant centre.
At a recent Town Council meeting, Cllr Julian Utting provided an update on the study, which is being funded as part of the Ross-on-Wye Market Town Investment Plan. The initial findings suggest that the town centre compares well with other market towns, boasting lower-than-average shop vacancy rates and an above-average visitor dwell time of 52 minutes.
While no final decisions have been made, the study is exploring various options, including traffic calming measures or prioritising pedestrian access in certain areas. Cllr Utting emphasised that this is still a pre-feasibility stage, and no specific conclusions have been drawn. However, he noted that some local traders who were initially hesitant about the proposal are now showing interest in the potential benefits of a pedestrian-friendly zone.
Cllr Danny Lister acknowledged that there has been some local concern regarding how pedestrianisation might impact businesses. He reassured residents and business owners that, at this stage, any proposed changes would not extend beyond Broad Street’s junction with New Street.
With Ross-on-Wye expected to see an increase in housing over the next two decades, traffic management and town planning will play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the town’s charm and accessibility. The feasibility study aims to assess the potential economic and social benefits of pedestrianisation while considering the needs of both residents and businesses.
As discussions continue, local businesses are encouraged to share their views on how these proposed changes could affect trade and footfall in the town centre. The study’s results will help shape the town’s long-term strategy for growth and development.
For business owners and residents who want to stay informed and engaged in this process, updates will be available through local news sources and community forums. Ross-on-Wye’s future is taking shape—now is the time to have your say!
